Deutsches Meeresmuseum Stralsund

Tropical sea surrounded by monastery walls

Since 1951 the German Oceanographic Museum in the historic city of Stralsund has its domicile in the former dominican monastery St. Katharinen. Topics like Oceanography, Marine Biology, Fishery as well as fauna and flora of the Baltic Sea are presented and communicated in the exhibitions. Exhibits which are especially fascinating include  the 15 meters long skeleton of a fin whale, polar bear, Japanese spider crab and leatherback turtle. 36 Aquaria of the tropics and the Mediterranean inhabitate sharks, sea horses, colorful coral fishes and huge sea turtles in their 350 000 liters-turtle-aquarium with a three by eight meters sized window.
