Museum of Brodsko Posavlje

Muzej Brodskog Posavlja

The Town and Archeology Museum in Brod upon Sava was founded on 23 January 1934 by the decision of the Town Council. It was housed in the Horvat Palace at number 8, Starcevic Street.

Since 1997 the museum collections have been housed in a part of the newly-built museum and business centre (working space, conservation rooms, exibition room), together with the building of the Town Hall, at number 40, Starcevic Street. The complex project of restauration and redecoration of the old Town Hall for the permanent exibition, started in 2002, is still going on.

The entire museum materials (about 40.000 items) have been distributed into the following departments: Natural, Archeological, Etnographic, Cultural -Historical, Contemporary History, Gallery. Within the museum there is also an expert scientific library with more than 20.000 titles. A restauration workshop has existed since 1993, as a separate department of the museum.

Along with the basic activities of gathering, preserving and expert processing of the valuable homeland heritage, the staff have prepared around 320 various specialized exibitions with about 160 accompanying catalogues, published more dozens of expert articles in the museum publication called «Vijesti» (The News) and other expert and scientific magazines. They have also participated in the organization of expert and scientific gatherings and round tables, have been the organizers and associates in significant projects, initiators and members of working teams for recognizable cultural events both in the town and in the county.

The museum has laid the foundation of important cultural and scientific institutions both within the town and the county: Town Library, National Archives in Slavonski Brod, Art Gallery, Subsidiary for the History of Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja.

During the 73 years of its existence the museum has been growing and changing its face and accordingly changing its name, moving, relocating, changing buildings and coming back to them, but it has always been in the old town centre - Starcevic Street, at numbers 8 and 40. It has been building and expanding its collections with gifts, purchased items, explorations, trying to keep up with new movements in museology, has been awarded, praised and criticized, but it has continually been present and unrelenting in preserving the lasting cultural values of the town of Slavonski Brod and the region of Brodsko Posavlje.
