Penafiel Municipal Museum

Museu Municipal de Penafiel

Penafiel Municipal Museum, has an excellent location, right in the heart of the city’s historical and shopping centre, and in one of the most emblematic buildings for the local community.

For more than fifty years, Penafiel Municipal Museum, which is owned by Penafiel City Council, has been a permanent structure, a bedrock of the municipality’s planning and management policy for cultural resources, playing a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of important values of its movable, immovable and immaterial heritage. Set up in 1948, next to the Library, in the palace of the Baron of Calvário, it owes its existence to the determination of its first director, Abílio Miranda.
With an excellent location, right in the heart of the city’s historical and shopping centre, and in one of the most emblematic buildings for the local community, the Municipal Museum now enjoys a large exhibition and services area, providing it with the best conditions to welcome its visitors and users. Visitors to the museum can enjoy the five themed rooms in the Permanent Exhibition, dedicated to Identity, Territory, Archaeology, Crafts, and Earth and Water, where the focus is on a clear and modern approach to the displays, supported by different levels of information aimed at a variety of audiences, and relying on many novel multimedia resources, where interaction, pedagogy and fun are the driving force.

The Museum includes four sections. The first section to be opened to the public was the Iron Age archaeological site of Monte Mozinho - "Castro do Monte Mozinho". The second, established in 2006, was the water mill of Ponte de Novelas – "Moinho da Ponte de Novelas" - , the third centre, the Olive Oil Press of Sebolido - "Engenho de Sebolido" - in april of 2013 and, more recently, in septembre of 2013, the traditional village of Quintandona – "Aldeia de Quintandona".The Museum runs guided tours of these sites for groups, which must be booked in advance.

It has a Friends’ Association, which was set up in 1999.
