New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester's original museum has wide ranging collections and displays spanning the natural and cultural world.

A family friendly day-out, the galleries include Ancient Egypt, DinosaursWild Space, World Arts and a gallery for the under 5s, The Den and our Victorian Art Gallery featuring works from our fine art collection.

The first floor galleries include the Arts & Crafts GalleryPicasso Ceramics: The Attenborough Collection and Leicester's internationally renowned German Expressionist collection.

Our temporary exhibitions feature works from our collections, touring exhibitions from National Museums and a programme of contemporary art and craft exhibitions.

We are delighted to be hosting the prestigious Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award (ARMA) artist residency award. Danish-born artist Maria Zahle will undertake the residency and commission during 2014 including free family workshops and an exciting opportunity for schools to work with an international artist.

The museum also offers a range of events from curator's talks to lunchtime concerts, visit our events pages to see What's On this month. Tours of the museum are also available for groups, please contact the museum for further details and availability.

The museum also offers a Gift Shop offering a range of exhibition merchandise and contemporary craft and design and Costa Coffee shop with free Wi-Fi available.

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery originated in 1849 when the Literary and Philosophical Society formally presented to the town its various collections, which have grown and developed over the last 160 years into one of the premier museums in the region.

New Walk Museum & Art Gallery has been the inspiration for many people including one of the world's most influential art dealers Anthony d'Offay and Lord Attenborough and Sir David Attenborough, who pursued their love of art and natural history as a result of spending their formative years as regular visitors to the museum.
