Dr. Carl Auer von Welsbach was born on September 1, 1858 in Vienna. He was an Austrian chemist and businessman. He discovered four elements, invented the gas mantle, metal filament light bulb and the flint for lighters. The main areas of his scientific research were the rare earth elements and radioactive substances. He founded the "AUERGESELLSCHAFT" in Berlin, the Treibacher Industrie AG and OSRAM. In 1900 he made the first sound recordings and in 1908 he was the first photographer in Austria to take color pictures.

The elements Neodymium and Praseodymium were discovered with the help of a technology he developed himself. Dr. Carl Auer von Welsbach's further research led to the discovery the elements Aldebaranium and Cassiopeium.
