The god of wine, intoxication, debauchery and ecstasy. God of fertility and renewal. God of chaos, danger and recklessness. The deity who breaks the shackles of convention, and who relishes liberation and freedom; known as Dionysus to the ancient Greeks and as Bacchus to the Romans.
Multifaceted as the influence of wine on its drinkers, he is mischievous and playful; seen and unseen; alternating between benevolence and maliciousness; switching masks as so befits the patron of drama and theater.
The cult of Dionysus is first attested in Greece in the Late Bronze Age, later becoming prevalent throughout the classical world, with the attraction of this enchanting god continuing to enthrall adherents far and wide.
