Created by Hungarian Erno Rubik in 1974, the Rubik's cube was a three-dimensional puzzle. The aim was to create blocks of the same colour on each of its six faces. The first puzzles, initially called the Magic Cube, were sold in Budapest in 1977.
After gathering interest from other countries, the puzzle was renamed the Rubik's cube and launched to the rest of the world in 1980. It became a huge success, winning Toy of the Year in 1981 and 1982, and selling over 100 million cubes between 1980 and 1982.
Although the craze for the cube was short lived, lasting only until 1983, it remains a recognisable and enduring symbol of the 1980s.
