The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, together with the Fine Arts Academy, is situated in the building of the former Jesuitic College and St. Ignatius Church, builded between 1728 and 1735 following the project of the bolognese architect Alfonso Torregiani. After the enetering of the Napoleonian troops in Bologna, in 1796, and the following closing of the religious orders, the Clementina Academy with the new name of Fine Arts Academy, began to collect numerous artworks from the suppressed institutions. The need of more space lend in 1803 to the moving from Poggi Palace, that became the seat of the University, to the next St. Ignatius buinding.
Entering the stairs hall, which originally was the convent's chapel, you can see in the ceiling the fresco depicting the St. Ignatius Glory, of the Jesuitic painter Andrea Pozzo. In the inner cloister you'll find a sandstone tank, buinded by Francesco Morandi called the Terribilia in 1587, transferred here in 1886 from the Botanical Garden of the City Hall Palce, where now is placed the Sala Borsa Library.
