Britannia Mine Museum

It was once the largest copper mine in the British Empire. Today, the Britannia Mine Museum opens up a little-seen world that fascinates all ages. Just like miners did, visitors climb aboard a mine train and rumble into an authentic tunnel. Entertaining guides describe the workings of drills and tools from the past century. Every visit includes gold panning with the chance to take home frequent findings. A captivating 15-minute film re-creates the past and reveals how families turned their isolated surroundings into pleasant experiences. The Children’s Discovery area keeps young ones entertained. A glittering gift shop offers unique stones and carvings.

The Museum site itself is an exhibit - from historical machinery to heritage buildings, there is plenty to see and do. From mucking machines, to ore carts and our working Lime Tank, come explore some of the equipment that once made Britannia great. We also house permanent exhibits that offer an insight into the social history of the Britannia Mines and mining history of BC. Our 1908 Machine Shop is also home to a number of historic pieces of equipment, from our restored ambulance car, to the man car that squeezed 16 miners into a space about the size of a small family car.
