[WORKSHOP] CLAY AND NESTORIAN CROSSES WORKSHOP

Nestorian Crosses Workshop

The University Museum and Art Gallery’s collection of Nestorian crosses contains numerous mysteries. Discussion continues about their function, style and designs, as well as the historical and cultural aspects of the bronze ornaments. In this workshop, the instructor will speak about the story behind the mysteries, and participants will learn about the characteristics of the Nestorian crosses from a craftsman’s point-of-view, while getting to make their own pewter ornaments.

Clay Workshop

As a way to highlight UMAG’s permanent collection of ceramics, each participant will learn how to hand sculpt a stoneware container. The instructor will explain basic clay building techniques, glaze applications and pattern design. He will compare Neolithic age ceramics with those from the Song and Han dynasty in terms of their form and pattern. Please bring your own container to take away your work. The dimensions of the ceramic piece should be approximately 25 x 15 x 15 cm

Audience and Limit :

Adult/Teenager: Aged 15 or above, maximum 20 people per class

Family: Aged 8-14, maximum 10 groups (Only admit 1 parent and 1 child) per class

Registration & Enquiries 

Registration starts on August 28, 2017. Course fee is HK$100 per participant for adult/teenager class or per group for family class (only admit 1 parent and 1 child aged 8–14). Accompanying adults who join the family class must stay with their child throughout the class. Bisque application and glazed firing are not included in the registration fee. Information on a firing service will be provided to participants. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis upon receiving both the application form and payment. Instructor 

Parry Ling Chin Tang—Born in Hong Kong, Parry Ling received his Bachelor’s degree from the Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006 and his Master’s degree from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014. He devotes himself to art making and has participated in various local exhibitions including the 2012 Hong Kong International Sculpture Symposium. In 2015, he was awarded the HKETO－NY Yale China Arts Fellowship to conduct community arts research in the US and to participate in the International Festival for Arts and Ideas 2015.
