Description: The British Ornithologists' Union benefitted a great deal from the research collaboration and international travel of two of its more active members, Osbert Salvin (d. 1898) and Frederick Ducane Godman (d. 1920), and after the death of the latter decided to award an occasional gold medal in their names for especially outstanding ornithological work. The prize was to appear on the CVs of many of the last century's prominent ornithologists, and the medal for it was designed by Allan Gairdner Wyon. This copy is a bronze specimen of the final design from Wyon's own workshop.
