National Museum of History

Национален исторически музей

The National Museum of History has the most impressive collection of national treasures and it is the largest museum in Bulgaria. Through more than 650,000 artifacts, it tells the story of the Bulgarian lands and nation.  It is hosted in the former administrative and event sections of government residence in Boyana, some 10 km (6 miles) from downtown Sofia.

Although the building was not created for a museum, it is majestic with its big halls, enormous wood carved doors and gigantic light structures. The park around the museum with a striking view to the Vitosha mountain is a piece of paradise that few large European or American museums can enjoy.

Inaugurated in 1973, it rapidly became one of the richest museums in the Balkan Peninsula.  Covering millennia of human development - from the dawn of the civilization to modern times - the museum possesses unique collections that can be seen only there.

It hosts world famous artifacts such as the Panagyurishte gold Treasure, the Gradeshnitza tablets, the Vila Armira mosaics, the St. Theodor ceramic Icon and many others.  Witnesses of all European history periods – from Paleolithic, through Neolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age, Thracian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine history, with focus on the 1300 years history of the Bulgarian state, the museum is one of the best places to visit while in Sofia.
