Museo Histórico y Antropológico Maurice van de Maele

This museum is located in the Anwandter House on Universidad Austral de Chile's Cultural Campus. It is distributed over two floors of the building, which retain the residence's original layout dating to 1880, while the exterior landscaping, in turn, demonstrates the relationship this house has with the city and the river.

The museum's rich collections provide insight into the multi-ethnic regional history, particularly the Mapuche-Huilliche culture and the German domestic architecture of the nineteenth century.

The foundation of the university's historical and anthropological museography is owed to the dedication of Maurice van de Maele, one of the first intellectuals to assume the task of rescuing and raising awareness of Valdivia's cultural heritage. For thirty years, he worked unceasingly for the protection of the cultural heritage of the Los Lagos Region and of the current Los Ríos Region.
