Flinders University Art Museum & City Gallery

Flinders University Art Museum (FUAM) and its satellite City Gallery preserve and develop the University’s historical and contemporary collections, and present them in ways that stimulate, enliven and enrich the immediate and wider communities they serve.

A springboard for interdisciplinary teaching and learning, both within and beyond the University, the collections (comprising some 5,500 works) are documented and interpreted by FUAM staff, often in collaboration with guest curators, through research, publications, exhibitions and public programs.   With the support of the Gordon Darling Foundation, FUAM is currently developing an online database to improve collection access.

Located at Bedford Park on the Flinders University campus, FUAM operates as a professional entity under the auspices of Flinders University of South Australia through the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (International and Communities).  It observes the Museums Australia Code of Ethics for Art, History and Science Museums (1994) and National Standards for Australian Museums and Galleries (2008), and is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Museums Australia and University Art Museums Australia (UAMA).

The City Gallery at the State Library of South Australia on North Terrace is the principal venue for the delivery of FUAM’s public program.  Comprising up to 8 exhibitions annually, these include collection-based shows, thematic projects often supporting contemporary South Australian artists and curators, and exhibitions from the national touring network.  The City Gallery is also a venue for the Adelaide Festival Visual Arts Program and works in association with the South Australian Living Artists Festival and Come-Out Festival.

Exhibitions are accompanied by floortalks for the general public and tours can be arranged for special interest groups.  Education kits for schools, where available, can be downloaded from the exhibitions pages.

Flinders University Art Museum & City Gallery celebrate diverse cultures and welcome broad constituencies.
