MAPI - Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena

MAPI provides visitors with a permanent exhibition of archaeological and ethnographic and musical instruments from different ancients cultures of the Americas, temporary exhibitions, workshops and courses. Located in Montevideo’s Old Town, this Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art Museum features four permanent exhibition halls and 12 halls for rotating programs. The first permanent hall focuses on Uruguay and Americas Archeology, showcasing artifacts from the country, while the other contains Pre-Columbian artifacts from different Latin American regions that are 3,000 years old. Conferences, seminars, workshops, educational exchanges and other events are often held by the museum. Moreover, because of its eclectic architecture and the advanced technology used during 1888 when it was constructed, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The permanent exhibits supply information in Spanish, English and Portuguese. MAPI’s hours run from 11:30am to 5:30pm Monday through Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
