Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama

The Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama, located a short walk from Tannehill's Civil War era stone furnaces, chronicles the iron and steel industry in Alabama from its beginnings to the present day. The early ironworks at Tannehill gave rise to the Birmingham Iron and Steel District, driving Alabama industry and the growth of the Birmingham area. Exhibits focus on the tools, technology, and processes of iron-making and related industries beginning in the 19th century. Attractions include a mid-1800s machine shop, original parts of the Six Mile Bloomery Forge dating to the 1830s, a Civil War collection, a history of the Birmingham cast iron pipe industry, and other historical objects relating to Alabama's iron and steel industry.
