EVALDAS PAUZA. “DANDELION WINE OR ŽMUIDZINAVIČIUS AND OTHER SOLDIERS”

Nowadays, sculpture seems to have approximated other branches of art, the art of an object, and often it becomes difficult to discern. Evaldas Pauza creates figurative sculpture, reminiscent of the traditional art, but his works deviate from the established categories of thinking and, as a result, embody the approach and understanding in today’s categories. What remains traditional is the method and technology of performance: molding, forming, casting in bronze or aluminium.

A sculpture located in a certain space often looks like a “foreign body”, but E. Pauza has an ability to domesticate his objects by imparting other, sometimes odd or even questionable sense and interpretation to the plot and narrative.

The sculpture “Punk go Home”. These are specific “soldiers” of today, inviting reflections on the past of our generation, the rebellion of Soviet time, the way of life, and to review current issues in the face of today – particular social and moral aspects of daily routine.

Another series of works consists of separate, unrelated works united only by form – they are two-dimensional objects-plates. A certain “social plastics” that reflects the daily (un)reality by means of irony and with sarcasm: “Landscape with Snakes”, “Dandelion Wine”, “Walking”, “Maxitaxi”.

The third part is historical-patriotic. The objects immortalize prominent historical personalities in a modern, attractive form and unexpected manner that provoke debate and call into question the concepts of patriotism and traits of personality. On display – such prominent figures as J. Basanavičius, A. Žmuidzinavičius and the Queen of England, each of them depicted as an enlarged version of tin soldiers.
