Graciela Iturbide: Cuando habla la luz

The Museum of Mexican History and Banco Nacional de México-Citibanamex through Fomento Cultural Banamex, A.C., presents an exhibition by Graciela Iturbide: cuando habla la luz ("When Light Speaks") through which she hopes to bring to public close to and develop a taste for this artistic expression.
Graciela Iturbide has been interested in art since childhood. She was attracted to literature, film and, at the beginning of the seventies, to photography. Iturbide feels that her image entitled Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico from 1972, is her first professional piece of art. This photographic shot caught the attention of the photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo and he saw great potential in the artist and selected her as his assistant.
This exhibition covers Graciela Iturbide's work from 1972 to 2017. Forty-five years of work are presented here, not as a retrospective sample but to present topics that have interested her throughout her professional life. The public can observe her aesthetic inquisitiveness in twenty modules which travel through portraits and then goes through a series of images where she centers her interest on the geometric structure of the things she undertakes. The center of the exhibition is formed by a section that brings together the work that has made her internationally famous. The exhibition closes with a topic that sets her apart and that she has managed to make her own: birds.
Graciela Iturbide won the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 2008, considered to be the most important one in the area of photography. The other Mexican who obtained it in 1984 was Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Her work has been published in more than twenty photobooks or coffee table books. The first of them was Avándaro, by the Diógenes Publishing House, accompanied by words from Luis Carrión, which appeared in 1971. Her work has been presented in the most important museums around the world, including the Pompidou in Paris in 1982 and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in 1990, just to mention a few.
