Abstract

Ting Yin Yung, also known as Master Ting, was a 20th-century Chinese artist who blended the characteristics of Chinese and Western approaches to painting. He first learned Western techniques in Japan and later focused on ink painting after returning to China. In 1949, he moved to Hong Kong where he continued to paint and also dedicated himself to art education. Known as the ‘Matisse of the East’ and ‘Bada Shanren for Modern Times’, he was an influential master of painting as well as a renowned teacher.

The documentary Old Man and His Painting, directed by Mr Frank Chow and Mr Tong Kay Ming, was filmed a year before Ting passed away in 1978, giving the audience a glimpse into Ting’s life and creative practice in his later years.
