This research looks at how Fu Baoshi 傅抱石 (1904–1965) employed classical methods and modern elements in his iconic landscape paintings, with an emphasis on the recurrent theme of construction and heavy industry. With reference to Fu’s works, essays, and activities and those of his Jiangsu contemporaries, this study aims to provide a glimpse into how change and redevelopment were depicted, and how interconnected art and politics have come to be in post-1949 China.
Rosanne Hui, Art historian and director of Han Mo Xuan 翰墨軒. Ms. Hui received her B.A. (Hons) in Art History and her B.A. in Economics from Brown University, and her J.D. from the University of Hong Kong. Her current research focuses on 19th-20th century Chinese art, in particular the works of Fu Baoshi and Tai Jingnong 臺靜農 (1902–1990). Her previous publications include Inkstone Collection of Zi Fang Guan and Scholars’ Ink: Tai Jingnong.
