Rodin: The Shape of Genius Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), one of the most famous sculptors of any period, is known for the vigour of his treatment of the human form. Peter Scott will illustrate that aspect of his sculpture, but also look at Rodin’s lesser-known works on paper, which have so many echoes in the work of later artists. As Rodin said: “It’s very simple, my drawings are the key to my work.” We will also consider some surprising elements of his working methods. Sat 3 November 2018, 10.30am - 12.30pm £12 Adults | £10 Friends or Students Brancusi: The Essence of Things The Romanian-born sculptor, Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), is widely acknowledged as an outstanding early 20th century sculptor and one of the most original artists working in Paris at a time of remarkable creativity. Brancusi was a master of many materials and used his skill to produce elegant and sophisticated works of great beauty in metal, stone and wood, often referencing his Romanian heritage. Work made from earth, sticks, stones or simply a walk made through the land. Land Art began in the 1960s and continues right through to the present day. Melanie will introduce you to artists and art works which fall under this term, and also advise on where to view some of these great contemplative and experiential artworks. Sat 17 November 2018, 10.30am - 12.30pm £12 Adults | £10 Friends or Students Antony Gormley: The figure and what it is to feel human British sculptor Sir Antony Gormley has become for many, a household name. His most famous works include the Angel of the North at Gateshead and Another Place on Crosby Beach, Liverpool. Gormley is fascinated by humanity. Through his sculptures he contemplates what it means to be human and what it feels like to be human. Melanie will discuss a wide variety of his work including some fascinating pieces from his early career.
