Empire and Flag Days at Beamish Museum

Empire Day was first celebrated in 1902, following the end of the Boer War. Traditionally held on 24th May on the birthday of Queen Victoria – it was intended to encourage people, especially children, to be aware of their duties as citizens of the British Empire. Following the hugely successful events in 2016 and 2017, we once again plan to tell the story of a flag day, as part of our First World War Commemorations. Flag days were held by organisations to raise money for causes including soldiers on the front line, prisoners of war and support for disabled servicemen. Whilst we will not be raising money for charity, we will be recognising the important contribution young people made towards fundraising during the First World War. Around the period areas of the museum there will be activities for all the family to get involved with, as we commemorate young people’s admirable work during the First World War. Whilst down on the Events Field we will be celebrating the great work that young people do nowadays with displays by many groups including the police, fire brigade and army cadets. Don’t miss the grand parade from The Town to The Pit Village which last year saw over 1500 young people and their organisers take part in – waving their flags and banners proudly.
