A set of picture cards in their original box (see Other Views). The cards are used to play the game, Happy Families. The cards are divided into sets of four, each featuring the members of different families, such as John Gold, the jeweller's son and Winnie Hake, the fisherman's daughter.
The players must collect a full set of cards for a particular family by asking other players if they have the missing cards to make up the set. The winner is the player who completes the most sets.
John Jacques and Son of London produced the first pack of cards designed specifically to play Happy Families in the 1860s. Chad Valley Co., Ltd made this set in the 1950s. The Johnson brothers founded the company in 1860 and took its name from the Chad stream next to the factory the company moved into in 1897.
