Sap whistles are made from short lengths of young pithy wood. The pithy core is removed to form a tube, which is then blocked at one end. The whistle is played by blowing across the top of the open end.
A few items are open at both ends and so these could have been used as small-bore pea shooters.
Other examples have one end chamfered into the shape of a mouthpiece.
These range in length from 4.7 cm to 13.2 cm. All are hand made using hedgerow woods (alder or fruitwoods).
