This black and red sateen corset was made in 1900, probably in Germany. It has a straight front, supported by a single busk and graded whalebone, and wide flat steel supports down each side.
The corset's bold colour and embroidery show how design and decoration could be combined with technical expertise in cut and manufacture to produce such distinctive garments.
The black flossing (see Other Views) is hand-stitched and the top edge of the corset is trimmed with black lace.
