Oil Painting - Hunter In A Landscape, 1830-1839 (Ref:L.F20.1935.3.0)
This small painting is typical of the type of equestrian portrait that Ferneley would have painted for his many hundreds of wealthy patrons. The hunter was a favourite subject for both artist and patron; at any one time a reputable huntsman would have owned a number of mounts. These small paintings would originally have been hung in groups in entrance halls, studies, billiard rooms and smoking rooms. They were also fashionable decoration for gentlemen's clubs.
