A 'Union of Democratic Mineworkers' shield shaped lapel badge. It carries the slogan 'Democracy reborn 1985'.
The UDM was established in Nottinghamshire in 1985. It was formed as a break-away union as a result of the strike in 1984 by the National Union of Mineworkers.
Local balloting for a strike led to a split in opinion amongst miners. Some pits stopped production while others, like those in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, carried on working. The hostility towards the miners who worked, from the miners who were on strike, caused irreparable damage to the NUM and led to the formation of the UDM.
