This delightful bronze dog was found during excavations on the Roman settlement at High Cross.
High Cross lies at the crossroads of two of the main roads of Roman Britain; the Fosse Way, which ran from Exeter to Lincoln, and Watling Street, which led from Kent, via London to Cheshire.
This dog may have been an ornamental mount on a piece of furniture: experts are none too sure, but he is still a charming representation of a household animal.
