Outfit By Alexander Mcqueen, Autumn/Winter 1996-1997 (Ref:X.C34.2002.0.0)
This startling outfit was designed by Alexander McQueen, possibly for the "Dante" collection shown at Spitalfields Church in 1996. The garment takes the form of a traditional boiler suit, but the bodice is intricately cut to appear as if it has slipped from one shoulder and is twisting around the body. The construction seams appear to have been formed so that the wearer can wrap the draped part of the bodice around the top part of their arm and elbow whilst crossing their forearm over the breasts.
The outfit shows the mastery of tailoring techniques and skills which McQueen learnt as an apprentice in London's Savile Row.
