ISPRA’s lithomineralogical collections, which were inherited from the National Geological Service, mainly derive from on-site activities related to the preparation of the Geological Map of Italy and from mineral surveys. A substantial number of specimens were also purchased and donated. Although most of the finds originated in Italy, ISPRA collections also comprise several specimens found abroad. Some of the collections have a considerable scientific, historical and museological importance which has made them internationally renown (such as the “Pescetto” and “De Santis” collections of ancient marbles). ISPRA’s lithomineralogical collections are divided into three groups. These are: building and decoration material, lithological and mineralogical finds.
