The Centre Pompidou Málaga, the first ever “Centre Pompidou provisoire”, will settle in Málaga’s Cubo for the next five years and host “The Collection”, a selection of works of art from the Centre Pompidou collection, offering a journey through 20th and 21st century art. This era’s wealth and profound transformations are illustrated with paintings, sculptures, installations, films and video material which have been created by artists from all over the world and are arranged by theme and chronology in five sections entitled “Metamorphoses”, “Self Portraits”, “The Man Without a Face”, “The Political Body” and “The Body in Pieces”.
The subject matter is always powerful and often disturbing or controversial, and illustrates the visual mutations as well as the historical and political transformations of our era. These are works of art that address you directly; you, the active visitor, observer and listener. These images, which bear the mark of the radical upheaval blown into the art of our time by Málaga’s son, Pablo Picasso, carry a message important to us all: the expression of humanity, in all its uniqueness and diversity. Whatever the medium, whatever the means, they tell us, in Antonio Saura’s words, that “art is nothing but life itself”.
