Ecological survival of a riverside community
In the Land and Water room we see a portrait of a rural world depicted by articles that are simultaneously really close and yet really far removed from our daily lives. This isachieved by showing pictures of other eras and reconstrution in which show old traditional uses of natural resources, land and water, some of which have survived down to the present day. The two traditional boats that can be seen in this room are exhibited in a really fascinating way, and the total effect is intensified by the acoustic environment that gives the whole room a deeply rural feel.
The object metaphor of this room is water: water, which explains the invention of the "valboeiros" (Douro/Valbom river/sea going boat with a flat bottom and sharp bow, propelled by oar, pole and spritsail) and transport/cargo vessels; the same water that provides power for the water mills and is used to water the crops.
