Gilbert White & The Oates Collections

Gilbert White & The Oates Collection is the historic and picturesque home of 18th century naturalist Gilbert White. The Oates Collections celebrate the lives and achievements of Frank Oates the Victorian Explorer and Captain Lawrence Oates who journeyed with Scott, in the ill fated Terra Nova expedition of 1912. Come and enjoy a special day out at this fascinating and most original museum commemorating important individuals in the exploration of the natural world, set in an historic village in beautiful countryside. Having paid admission, our guests are free to come and go as often as they please that day. View the House and Museum, go for a walk around the delightful gardens and through the Park to see the follies, take tea in the Parlour and shop in the old billiard room. Time and energy permitting, walk up the famous Gilbert White's Zig Zag through the hanging beech woods, return and tour the grounds . Or just sit and look at one of the most splendid views in the South of England.
