Nikoloz Baratashvili Memorial House-Museum - Museum of the Union of Tbilisi Museums

Nikoloz Baratashvili Memorial House-Museum is one of the structural units of the Union of Tbilisi Museums. The museum is dedicated to the life and work of a famous Georgian romantic poet, Nikoloz baratashvili (1817-1845).

Nikoloz Baratashvili Memorial House-Museum follows the mission and main aims of the Union of Tbilisi Museums. The mission of the Union is the new role of the museums in contemporary society, which can be described as a synergy of the traditional museum activity and an educational aspect, which focuses on knowledge sharing to each person. We believe that modern museums must expand their vision and must prioritize the visitors together with collection. Museums must have a clear social function, and thus better communicate with visitors.

The Union of Tbilisi Museums aims popularization and presentation of the 19th century culture and epoch context, preservation of cultural heritage, strengthening the functions of the museums and giving them new meanings, dissemination and strengthening of educational directions, involvement into the tourism sector, promoting low-income activities, and strengthening traditional support.

Nikoloz (Tato) Baratashvili, as a thinker and artist, led development of the whole XIX century literature in Georgia. According to Ilia Chavchavadze’s opinion, Baratashvili’s oeuvre started European vision in Georgian literature.

XIX century memorial building of the museum is located in one of the oldest and picturesque districts of Tbilisi - Kala-district (17 Chakhrukhadze Street). This historically important place, full of the old monuments, is distinctive by national diversity of the population. The museum is bordered by the VI century monument – Anchiskhati church, in the surroundings there can be met: one of the gates ruins of ancient Tbilisi; Baratashvili’s contemporary historian, Platon Ioseliani’s house; King Irakli II Square, where was located the two-story house of Baratashvili’s mother and uncle, Efemia and Grigol Orbeliani; St. George Church at the court of the last king of Georgia - George XII.

Nikoloz Baratashvili Memorial House-Museum houses life and work-related materials of a romantic poet, including epochal things, furniture, folk musical instruments, XIX century grand piano, paintings, the first editions of the poet's works since 1876, photos, a variety of classical manuscripts, books and other auxiliary materials. Among the exhibits of the museum are: two photos - one is the poet's muse Ekaterine Chavchavadze’s literary salon in Tsarskoye Selo and other is Classic Gymnasium; the first edition of Baratashvili’s poem collection published in 1876; George Leonidze’s scientific manuscript dated 1935; Invitation to Tbilisi Opera and Ballet theater for the 100th memorial day of poet’s death, dated by 10/21/1945.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - UNESCO, has included Nikoloz Baratashvili’s anniversary date - 200th anniversary since his birth, into the list of cultural events of international importance in 2017.

In 2017, the Union of Tbilisi Museums organized the whole rehabilitation process of Nikoloz Baratashvili Memorial House-Museum. There was renovated and re-exposed the whole space, there were used the animated holograms, on which Lira Production Studio worked for a few months. The museum became the first multimedia museum space in Georgia. For the first time, in the exhibition space, there was used creative industry of modern Museography and 3D animation holograms. The renovated exposition space of the museum aims to popularize the name of Nikoloz Baratashvili, involving modern technologies and methodology. The renovated museum was opened on 4th of December, on the 200th anniversary of Nikoloz Baratashvili.
