VINSEUM, Museo de las Culturas del Vino de Cataluña
The Museum of Vilafranca was founded in 1934 with the aim of bringing together different collections related to the Penedès region. In this connection, archaeology has played a significant role due to the findings that have been made in the county. Further historical collections resulting from private donations were also incorporated such as artworks, which are the testimony of the economic vitality of the country, natural history collections, wine and ceramics; all of which are fruits of the curiosity of the public. Among these collections – it could not be otherwise - there were many objects related to the cultivation of vines and winemaking, which has been one of the key activities in the Penedès region for many years.
The permanent exhibition at the VINSEUM is dedicated to the vineyard and wine, and the close connection these have with the Penedès region and Catalonia. Your journey starts on the third floor of the Royal Palace and ends with a cava or wine tasting in the tavern of the museum.
VINSEUM will take you on a journey through the stories of wine, to rediscover the footprints it has left us, from its origins to the present time, from the land where the vine stems to the sensorial explosion of wine tasting.
Come and experience:
El Rebost (The storage room): How and why a museum collects the memory of a territory marked by vinegrowing and winemaking since the arrival of the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans.
El tirs (Thyrsus): Where you can discover what the vine is, where it comes from and the works which accompany its cultivation.
El Clos (The Winery): From grapes to must and from must to wine, and where you will see that a good wine is a matter of science and patience.
El Moll (The Docks): How wine opens up to the world and the world to wine.
La sobretaula (Table talk): Wine reaches the table. There we experience all the pleasing moments a wine has to offer.
L’Aplec (The Gathering): Stories of life where we are able to see how society changes around wine.
La Taverna (The tavern): Where we will discover firsthand all the flavors of wine.
VINSEUM is a dynamic space that offers a diverse number of cultural programmes, where wine is analysed from a number of different perspectives along with gastronomy, philosophy, performing arts and above all, culture.
The educational program, addressed to primary and secondary education groups, is called The School of the Senses. With it, the museum has the ideal tool to approach children as well as adolescents with forms of ancient culture, which are linked to the landscape and history; and by that to provide pupils with elements to refine all the senses that allow us to enjoy the pleasures of life.
The Museum also has a documentation center and a specialised store.
VINSEUM organises temporary exhibitions, walking tours and cultural dissemination about wine.
