Museum of the City of New York

The Museum of the City of New York fosters understanding of the distinctive nature of urban life in the worlds’ most influential metropolis. Housed in a newly renovated 1932 Georgian Colonial-Revival building, the Museum is located at the top of Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street, across the street from Central Park’s Conservatory Garden, and at the southern end of the neighborhood of East Harlem.

Visit the first-of-its-kind exhibition New York at Its Core and experience New York City’s history and future come alive through stories of innovation, energy, struggle, and the vision of generations of immigrants, politicians, tycoons, dreamers, master builders, and ordinary New Yorkers. Through almost 450 historic objects and images as well as contemporary video, photography, and interactive digital experiences, you can dive deep into the city’s past, present, and future.

Also on view is the award-wining documentary Timescapes, a feat of multimedia historical storytelling that brings viewers along on a 28-minute journey through 400 years of history. The film’s final chapter captures the astonishing transformations the city has experienced in the first decades of the 21st century. Headsets with translation in Spanish, French, and Mandarin are available free of charge.

Continue to explore what makes New York New York through the special rotating exhibitions on the 2nd and 3rd floors or enjoy a bite to eat in Chalsty’s Café, which overlooks Central Park. Finally, do not miss the Museum Shop, a treasure trove of New York-centric books and mementos.
