Historisches Museum Basel - Musikmuseum

The section «Music in Basel» gives visitors an insight into the many different music-making activities that existed here from the 16th to the 20th century. The keyboard instruments on show in the main room were either made in Basel or are known to have been played there. Two large oil paintings by Joseph Esperlin of Basel dating from 1757 show people making music in their own homes. Exhibited in the individual cells are instruments used for representative functions, such as drums and fanfare trumpets, as well as the instruments played by Basel’s many music societies or as part of its annual Fasnacht celebrations. Another cell is devoted to the 20th century rediscovery of «ancient music» in which Basel had a key role to play.
