A Unique Vision: Outsider and Self-Taught Art

Over the last 2 decades, Orleans House Gallery has worked closely with the Henry Boxer Gallery to showcase pioneering displays of outsider and visionary art. This autumn, the Richmond-based dealer and collector Henry Boxer returns with new and familiar self-taught artists and works to engage and enlighten – each offering a unique vision, from the occult to the mediumistic.

Take this rare opportunity to explore the fascinating perspectives of acclaimed outsider and visionary artists, including the Edwardian portrayer of mad cats, Louis Wain; the housewife-medium, Madge Gill; the visionary depicter of resurrections, Donald Pass; and contemporary savant artists George Widener and Stephen Wiltshire.

Artists exhibiting for the first time include Matthew Nightingale, an ex prisoner, who recently won the Koestler Award, William A Hall aka ‘The LA Car Man’, who lived homeless on the streets of Los Angeles, in a beaten-up old Dodge, secretly producing drawings of futuristic cars, and Kim Noble, who has Multiple Personality Disorder, with 13 personalities working as artists in their own distinctive styles, each totally unaware of the others.

Henry Boxer states: ‘This year has been an important one for outsider art – with ground-breaking exhibitions at the Wellcome, William Morris Gallery and College of Psychic Studies – all of which I had loaned works to. I am therefore delighted to be invited to show at Orleans House Gallery once again, I hope that the art on display allows for an opening, and a discovery, of who we all truly are, beyond words, ideas and appearances.’
