“Captain Nep”
Mikhail Bulich was a belarusian Art Brut maker.
He spent all his life in psychoneurological residential facilities. And he spent all his life painting.
You’re welcome to our exhibition, which is a complete history of the unique person. Misha was populated by simple images, kind of symbolic system he reduced his universe to: moons, elks, stars, maidens, scuba divers and birds. They lived inside him and he used them for cosmogonic storytelling to explain the whole world: both outside one and inner one.
You can read the art of Bulitch as a simplified model of all books of Genesis, as a visual and figural epistemology. Intuitively Misha Bulich did the same thing that any professional artist does: he explained the reality by letting it go through him. And more than that, he managed to take a shortcut to the high art through the ‘forest’ of his own unconscious which usually takes years of efforts from other artists. His works tell us about the Universe and also about the unique nature of a human who had the heart to conceive this Universe what resulted in creating his own one.
We can question ourselves how mental state and social status affected works of Misha Bulich. Whatever they were: naive art, art brut or outsider art… But no hope for new Bulich’s works because the artist is dead. The paintings he made few months before death are the basis of our exhibition. Large sizes, bold open colors, fantastic creatures - they are Misha’s space, the highest point of his art and the last one.
