Scarf Festival is the National Wool Museum's annual celebration of all things scarf. #CelebrateTheScarf
The 2018 Scarf Festival theme is: Living on the Land.
A sense of place and connection.
The natural and built landscapes, the place where we live, work and play.
This must-see textile exhibition is an eclectic showcase of original handcrafted scarves entered by anyone - from school kids to beginner crafters to accomplished artisans from Australia and internationally.
Exhibition runs at the National Wool Museum in Geelong from Friday 8 June until Sunday 26 August 2018.
We have a fabulous line up of events that you won't want to miss, as part of Scarf Festival 2018 including:
- The Masterclass Series: discover or refine your creative skills with a series of exclusive NWM Masterclasses by leading artists, Heather Frizzell, Jo Bagge and Nichola Prested.
- Scarf After Dark Degustation: pop on a fancy scarf and come to an exclusive showing of Scarf Festival 2018 and sample local foods, wine and music curated specifically for the exhibition.
- Wool La La: join us for a bilingual tour of Scarf Festival 2018 in the language of fashion - French!
At the exhibition you can expect to see traditional and experimental scarves in the following categories:
| 100% wool: | The use of materials – scarves in this category must be made from 100% wool which includes any natural animal fibre: alpaca, goat, sheep, etc. |
| Colour: | The use of colour - How does colour (natural, dyed or applied) affect over all design and composition? |
| Knitted: | The method by which two sticks are used to create multiple interlocking loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials in a line or tube. By hand or machine. |
| Woven: | The method by which warp (longitudinal) and weft (lateral) threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. By hand or machine. |
| Crocheted: | The method of interlocking loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. By hand or machine. |
| Felted: | The method by which a textile is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibres together. Wet or needle felting is permitted. |
| Menswear: | Any medium or discipline may be employed. |
| Sustainability: | This examines both processes employed such as eco dyeing, minimising energy, transport or material costs and use of materials such as recycling, upcycling and adaptive reuse. |
| Extreme Scarf: | Recognizing interpretation as a technical skill. The emphasis in this category is on concept, design, fabrication and storytelling. The artist’s statement and addressing this year’s Scarf Festival theme are critical. |
| Primary School: (Ages 5 – 12 years) | Any medium or discipline may be employed. The artist’s statement and addressing this year’s Scarf Festival theme are critical. |
| Secondary School: (Ages 13 – 18 years) | Any medium or discipline may be employed. The artist’s statement and addressing this year’s Scarf Festival theme are critical. |
There is also the coveted Scarf of the Year prize and People's Choice Award. Most of the scarves displayed in the exhibition are available for purchase, although all scarves must remain on display until the close of the exhibition.
