The exhibition "Singing is my Prayer”

M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, V. Putvinskio St. 55, Kaunas

The exhibition "Singing is my Prayer” is dedicated to the 135th anniversary of one of the most prominent pre-war Lithuanian opera singers Marijona Rakauskaitė.

Marijona Rakauskaitė was a lively, charming and greatly talented personality, with her charming soprano having enriched the Lithuanian opera from 1924 to 1948.

Born in the United States, brought up in a religious but very creative and educated family Marijona, it seems, could not have chosen another way as a creator’s, doing all the best to make sense of her activities. A singer’s talent was certainly inherited from her father Mykolas Pranas Rakauskas, a former book-hawker.

In 1922 Marijona has finally decided to settle in Lithuania. Already in March, 1924 the singer debuted in Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen" and a leading role of Carmen performed by her had enjoyed great success.

About 1935 Marijona met her "friend – life out of life", a set designer Liudas Truikys and remained with him until her death in 1975.

In this exhibition you will get acquainted with Marijona’s personal belongings, letters and photographs nowhere else exhibited.
