The Calm before the Storm: Local Life in 1914

An exhibition exploring what life was like in Walsall at the outbreak of the First World War. Walsall in 1914 was full of industries and employment opportunities. But low wages and high food prices were forcing workers into poverty. In the first half of the year people were concerned with strikes, political troubles in Ireland, and the actions of the suffragettes. The possibility of war was hardly considered. When the announcement came, hundreds of local boys joined up, seeking adventure. The exhibition will display clothing of the period, everyday objects used by local people, and early items of war memorabilia.
