Abstract

This lecture will consider Ting Yin Yung’s oil paintings in terms of how the artist sought to effectively merge classical Chinese and modern art, calligraphy and seal carving. By capturing the vitality and freedom of forms learned from ancient scripts and epigraphs, he communicated the immediacy of his emotions through diverse forms of brushwork. This fact invites reflection on two intersecting themes: the rise of international modern art in twentieth-century Hong Kong and the way that the Chinese aesthetic tradition has been used in practice.

Speaker

Shuo Hua is currently Assistant Curator at the University Museum and Art Gallery, University of Hong Kong. She received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD from the University of Hong Kong. Her publications centre on modern East Asian art, exhibitions and collecting history in a cross-cultural context.
