Organised in conjunction with the exhibition Living Kogei: Contemporary Japanese Craft from the Ise Collection, this afternoon symposium will feature three presentations and a roundtable discussion on the subject of tradition and reinvention in contemporary Japanese craft. The speakers include two prominent artists whose works are featured in the exhibition, scholars specialising in contemporary craft from Hong Kong Baptist University, and the curators of the exhibition. The first hour will provide an overview of the exhibition and the work of the exhibited artists. The second will explore issues of mentorship and training in various craft industries, the level of governmental and private support for these industries, as well as some of the challenges facing artists as they navigate the space between traditional and contemporary practice in the crafts—both in Japan and around the world.
