International Museum Day is set on May 18th each year by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The day is set to call on the world to pay attention to museums and cultural undertakings, and to promote the healthy development of museums. This year’s theme is: Museums as Cultural Hubs: the Future of Tradition. Regarding the theme, the National Palace Museum emphasizes “audience service is the hub.” This year, the National Palace Museum responded to the concept of “cultural hub” with “audience service,” and also refers to the idea of a “participatory museum” proposed by museologist Nina Simon. The National Palace Museum is planning a special project and is also combining the May exhibitions and teaching activities at the museum to increase participation for the International Museum Day.
The National Palace has stated that regardless of the four functions of the museum’s traditions (collection, display, education, and research), the diverse interfaces of participatory museums must be modeled through service to visitors. Museum volunteers play an indispensable role in the cultural hub of today’s museums, connecting together cultural content through a common field. For International Museum Day, the museum will unveil its volunteers through a specially produced promotional video. The video will be broadcast on the front page of the National Palace Museum website on May 14th (Tuesday). In the film, three generations of volunteers from the NPM were invited. They were challenged to an extreme speed guide, answered questions, and publicly revealed their true identities. Additionally, on the evening of May 18th, a free post-show sharing session will be held on “New Era: Actually, My Other Identity is a National Palace Museum Volunteer.” All are welcome to participate. The National Palace Museum Volunteer Association, established in 1989, will have its 30th anniversary this year. The National Palace Museum invites volunteers of different generations to share their life experiences over the past three decades with the museum on International Museum Day.
This year, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, and the Chinese Association of Museums(CAM), the National Palace Museum participated in connecting the activities of national museums and local cultural centers. Additionally, in response to International Museum Day, the museum launched various measures and activities in May. For example, on May 18th, visitors can enjoy free admissions to the Main Hall, and can also enjoy a 10% discount at the boutique store and restaurant. The public is welcome to participate in the various exciting activities held by the museum.
