International Museum Day 2018 - Connecting Collections: the Great Auk and Clarke Charms

This year Scarborough Museums Trust will be approaching International Museum Day from a new angle. Rather than running a physical event in one of our venues, on 18th May 2018 we will be taking to social media to discuss two of the most exciting aspects of our collections: the Great Auk egg and the William James Clarke charms. We will be connecting with our colleagues in museums around the world who hold similar collections to discuss the synergies and differences between the material we hold through a series of tweets posted from our @SMT_Collections and our @SMTrust accounts. The discussions surrounding the Great Auk will focus on the remains and eggs of this extinct bird held in collections around the world, while those concerning the Clarke charms will explore Clarke's relationship with the noted folklorist Edward Lovett, how they shared collections and the similarities between Scarborough's charm collection and those of Lovett's held in both British and American museums.
