Herbert Illuminations: The Secret Sisterhood Of George Eliot And Harriet Beecher Stowe

Guest speakers are authors Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney. George Eliot is often imagined as an isolated figure, set apart from other female writers by her lofty genius. However in today's event, authors Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney reveal the story of Eliot's little known friendship with the American author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe. Despite being separated by thousands of miles, these two literary legends overcame vast differences in personality, opposing views on religion and even the stigma of Eliot 'living in sin' to form a deeply personal bond. Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney are the co-authors of A Secret Sisterhood: The hidden friendships of Austen, Brontë, Eliot and Woolf, published by Aurum Press.
