Dr Jane Darcy delivers the Keats Foundation Annual Lecture. The Isle of Wight enchanted Keats. In April 1817 everything he saw there held endless promise – the sea, the ‘delightful wood-alleys,’ the ‘quick freshes’ and the primroses. Yet his relationship with the island and isolation was complex, and on this first visit loneliness overwhelmed him.
