Fabric, Fields & French Knots: Celebrating East Anglia in Stitch

‘Fields, Fabric and French Knots’ is an exhibition of new work by members of local Embroiderers’ Guild groups in Suffolk and Essex, from 1 May to 29 October 2017. The Museum has collaborated with local textile artists to create an exciting exhibition to celebrate the Museum's 50th anniversary in 2017. Lisa Harris, Collections and Interpretation Manager says “We often take our surroundings for granted as we rush about our busy lives, but by exploring the Museum’s artefacts and our region – rich in history and heritage, with diverse wildlife, beautiful coastline and huge open skies – these artists and craftspeople have taken on a new challenge. Using traditional and modern techniques, participants have developed new expressive works that celebrate what East Anglia means to them.” The exhibition, supported by the Big Lottery Fund’s Celebrate programme, is part of the Museum’s 50th anniversary year celebrations, marking its original public opening in 1967. Works will be displayed across the Museum’s beautiful 75-acre site and in some of the 20 historic buildings which visitors can enjoy. Stitching is a very sociable activity, historically bringing people and communities together to celebrate, heal and relax. Lisa Harris said: ‘We think visitors will be impressed by the creativity on display and hope that they will be inspired to get involved themselves at one of our workshops or drop-in sessions.’
