International Museum Day 2017 : Sambang Museum

HoS welcomes the International Museum Day on 18 May by organizing a number of educational programs under the theme of “Sambang Museum” (Visit Museum) that are held at the HoS Museum as well as by visiting museums in Surabaya.

“When Death is Not the End” Exhibition

Along the theme of the 2017 International Museum Day of "Saying the Unspeakable in Museums" HoS and the Ethnography Museum (managed by the Airlangga University's Center for Ethnography Studies) take visitors on a trip to get familiarized and see the unique funeral traditions in Indonesia. Death is often seen as a misfortune and an end to a life, which is faced with grief and even fear. For members of several tribes in Indonesia, death is considered as a stage that opens the gate to another life.

Airlangga University's Center for Ethnographic Studies invites visitors to see how death is taken as the beginning of a new life for which celebration is called. Collections such as Decorated Skulls from the Asmat tribe, Bones from Trunyan Village, a miniature of the Waruga, and the representation of the burial traditions of a number of tribes in Indonesia are showcased under the theme of When Death is Not the End to commence from May 2 to June 1, 2017.
